Vice President Mike Pence walked out on his home-state Indianapolis Colts Sunday when members of the opposing team kneeled for the national anthem.

As has become their custom since last week, several San Francisco 49ers players kneeled in a row for the anthem on Sunday in Indianapolis, while a row of 49ers players stood behind them with a hand on their heart, and the other on the shoulder of the player kneeling in front of them. This has been the response of the 49er’s team to President Trump calling out kneelers at a rally in Alabama two weeks ago.

When the anthem began, Pence and his wife were pictured with hands over their heart, but after the song finished they promptly left to protest the protesters.

Pence later posted a statement on twitter which read,

I left today’s Colts game because President Trump and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem.

At a time when so many Americans are inspiring our nation with their courage, resolve, and resilience, now, more than ever, we should rally around our Flag and everything that unites us.

While everyone is entitled to their own opinions, I don’t think it’s too much to ask NFL players to respect the Flag and our National Anthem.

I stand with President Trump, I stand with our soldiers, and I will always stand for our Flag and National Anthem.

Apparently the Vice President had expected something like this may happen, and President Trump later tweeted that he had asked Pence to leave if the protest reared its head at the game.

I asked @VP Pence to leave stadium if any players kneeled, disrespecting our country. I am proud of him and @SecondLady Karen.

Pence had tweeted a photo of him and his wife, Karen Pence, saying they were looking forward to cheering for the Colts and honoring Manning.

It’s a shame that these players continue to disrespect the American flag as a means to push their political cause, but it is nice to see that the nation has leaders who are willing to lead by example, rather than caving to political correctness.
